Contraception

Cabbagetown Women's Clinic provides contraception services for our abortion patients, including IUD insertion and birth control counselling. Whether you are looking for long-term contraception, exploring your options, or considering contraception as part of an abortion appointment, our team can help you find what works for you. We will assess your options during your abortion visit.
All contraception services are provided by our physician with support from our all-female nursing team. Most contraception services are covered under OHIP for patients with valid Ontario health coverage. No physician referral is required. We offer appointments for IUD insertion/removal on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Please call us for an IUD appointment..
Booking
You do not need a physician referral to book an IUD insertion appointment. You can call us directly. Full contraceptive counselling is offered to all our abortion patients. IUD insertion/removal appointments are available on Thursday and Friday afternoons.
To book or to speak with our team, please contact the clinic.
Birth Control Counselling
Choosing a method of contraception is a personal decision. It depends on your medical history, your lifestyle, your reproductive goals, and your preferences. During your abortion visit, our team provides one-on-one counselling to help you understand your options and choose the method that fits.
During a counselling appointment, we discuss:
-
How each method works
-
Effectiveness rates
-
Side effects and risks
-
How long each method lasts
-
What is involved in starting and stopping the method
-
Cost and OHIP coverage where relevant (almost all contraception is covered under OHIP + for all members that are less than 25 years old)
There is no pressure to choose a particular method, and there is no judgment about what you decide. Many patients use birth control counselling as a chance to ask questions they did not feel comfortable asking elsewhere.
IUD Insertion
We provide IUD insertion at our clinic. An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are among the most effective forms of contraception available and can last several years, depending on the type.
There are two main types of IUDs:
Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin into the uterus. They are highly effective, often reduce or eliminate menstrual bleeding over time, and typically last between five and eight years depending on the brand.
Copper IUDs do not contain hormones. They work by creating an environment in the uterus that prevents fertilization. Copper IUDs typically last up to ten years and can also be used as emergency contraception within five days of unprotected sex.
Our team will help you decide which type of IUD is the right fit for you. IUD insertion is a brief in-clinic procedure, and we provide trauma-informed care throughout, including pain management options (i.e. Advil, Naproxen and cervical block) and the support of our nursing team.
