Cabbagetown Women’s Clinic performs therapeutic abortion services by the following methods:
Medical Abortions: (Abortion Pill)
Patients that are 63 days (9 weeks) or less into their pregnancies may have the option of a medical abortion rather than a surgical one. This requires that the pregnancy to be confirmed to be 63 days (9 weeks) or less and that the patient not have certain medical conditions. Patients opting for a medical abortion will be prescribed Misogymiso which consists of mifepristone and misoprostol. The mifepristone is an anti-hormone that blocks the effects of progesterone, a hormone that allows the pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol to be taken 24 to 48 hours later will to cause contractions in the uterus and relaxation of the cervix which will help to push out the contents of the uterus. A follow up visit is required in order to make sure that the abortion has been completed.
Dilation and Curettage (D & C) Abortion:
This abortion procedure is performed on patients from 5-12 weeks into their pregnancy. Prior to the abortion, an ultrasound is performed to determine the gestational age. The procedure is done with conscious sedation (I.V. and local freezing). The procedure takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Recovery time can vary from 15 minutes to half an hour.
